I agree, in that the person does not know if you are there are not :P But in this case, can see why he did it.

Celebrations of a life well lived matter to family, friends, admirers, and survivors. And I think the very personal, loving, critical, humorous words spoken matter for survivors, too. Apparently the ritual was something that he needed to participate in - for himself. I can understand that.
