Fuel Surcharges

Fuel Surcharges
When gas charges were climbing over $3 per gallon several months ago, I noticed that my water delivery company (Deer Park) and my local sanitation company had added a 'fuel surcharge'.
My assumption all along was that in lieu of a price increase which tends to be permanent, the surcharge was needed to offset some of the higher cost for fuel. At least that is what I thought.
I just realized both companies are still charging the surcharge even though prices have declined. I don't think they will get much lower than they are today. I think the Fuel Surcharge just became an easy way to increase what they charges, Permanently.
I've voiced my opinion to them and will consider moving my business if I can find alternate suppliers who don't have the same surcharge.
Am I over reacting?

No, although you need to factor in the hassle factor of breaking in and fully training new suppliers. (Water and trash -- if that's what you mean by sanitation -- may not need too much of this, although our trash guys have learned to do things the way we like.)
It may also be that, because billing is automated, they just forgot, especially if they're small operations (or local independent franchises). Maybe your opinion will remind them.
But if not, well, that's what we're about in this country: capitalism. I just cancelled a newspaper subscription over a relatively small matter. HPH

Did you ever notice how the price of gas at the pump goes up immediately whenever there is any sort of problem that will effect the future price of gas in months to come, but it takes months for the prices to fall even after a surplus shows up?
Now that the price of gas and oil is increasing again I'd bet the fuel surcharge is, for the most part, going to be a permanent part of every bill. Its really just another way to raise the price.
