The big airlines mergers have limited competition as well as any normal recourse to remedies to abuse. There are now only a small number of competing carriers left for many routes in the country, so there is often not much choice. So United could possibly get away with this outrage without paying much of a price, alas...

My next-door neighbor was a 777 captain for United. He took early retirement about 10 years ago as he could see the writing on the wall. Previous to that, he flew for Eastern Air Lines, and even today, remains bitter about the way it was (mis)-managed when he lost his job there.

This reminds me (on a much smaller scale) of an argument I witnessed at the grocery store a few years where the store manager was loudly arguing with a customer over the price marked on a bag of potato chips. Just giving her the "sale" price would have saved a lot of PR value.

It does appear that the good doctor has engaged legal representation, and of course their real problem now is in China, boy it seems that Oscar just can't get a break either. He seems to be under the belief that he "personally" called Dr. Dao, but not the doc, the doc's family, nor the firm representing them has heard a single word from Mr Munoz or United. Maybe he put that apology in the email to his employees, no that didn't happen.
Perhaps we could get Mr Munoz to try the re-accommodation route for himself.
BTW, American is just as bad, and I speak from personal experience of being drug out of line, harassed, pulled from first class where, I was ticketed and had a boarding pass, and threatened with security and having my ticket withdrawn. This is not an uncommon experience.

And the guy is a doctor and told them he had scheduled patients to see. And he was injured , with a concussion and an assortment of other injuries. This will be a huge lawsuit.

maybe, just maybe, if this guy gets a ton of money from united, the airlines will pause for a moment to contemplate their actions....
of course then they'll call the lawyers to tighten up the rules some more.

I bet when all is said and done he won't get that much and what he does get will be sealed.
