13 fatalities among 1,300,000 vehicles that were on the road up to 10 years?

The lose of one life is one too many. GM will most certainly pay dearly for all 13. Give the new GM leadership a thumbs up since I am sure they ignored the advice of their own attorneys. At the forefront as this came out they made an apology which ensures they take responsibility and must pay for it.
If GM had been this forthright 50 years ago, the Corvair would probably still be in production. It's about time they learned this lesson.
[/quote]Owned a 62 Corvair Monza and lived. Tell those stats to the families of the loved ones that were killed. GM should be held accountable for every single fatality.

Owned a '60 coupe and a '64 convertible, mostly in the Seattle area. Frankly I think they saved my life a couple of times in snow and gravel. A pretty nice little, affordable car for it's day. Know your car and drive within your limits.

I drove a roommate's Corvair a couple of time in college. It was the only car I ever felt comfortable driving from the start. I later owned a couple of swing-axle Volkswagens (similar to the much-vilified early Corvairs); I never had a problem that the VW wouldn't get me out of if I let it.

Here is an interesting twist on the story: apparently GM' bankruptcy gives them immunity for any claims from accidents that occurred before 2009.

I saw that. The new CEO states "That was the old GM", this is the new GM, we are not responsible". What a crock of $hit. GM held back this information and now is taking the advice of their corporate ambulance chasers and pleading not guilty. Shame of them. I hope they lose sales over this as they deserve to.

Makes you really believe that they "are too big to fail"!

Taking an attitude like that... just isn't socially right.

I'd also add remarkably short sighted.
Being strictly mercenary about it. What is their annual advertising budget?
how much will they have to spend combating this bad image as opposed to quickly and quietly stepping up, taking responsibility, and paying off the people who suffered a loss.
You know acting like a company who's product you can trust instead of a bunch of merciless weasels.

Maybe I'm mis-reading that but isn't that just a reporter speculating what position they could take due to the 2009 date?

Either way it will likely cost GM many billions.

Toyota was fined $1.2 billion because it failed to notify the proper authorities or the public that it had a problem. And that sounds exactly like what’s happened at General Motors. Toyota also settled a class action for $1.6 billion. It is estimated that with the cost of lawyers and the need for sales incentives and marketing campaigns analysts say the total cost was $5 billion!
