We never leave town without taking BB along or boarding her at her favorite pet hotel (she seems to not care if she comes back home from it). However, she gets uber excited, nervous and agitated if she sees us packing our bags. Once or twice she got so nervous that she gave us a little "gift". I've noticed that she's very in tune with our activities and feelings and seems to pick up on our conversations and even behaves differently if once of us is feeling unwell. It would be quite interesting to know how much she understands and quite frankly I'm rather relieved that she cannot vocalize her thoughts. We've driven quite far out of our way to find a pet friendly hotel at times. She is totally well behaved at hotels, but once we returned from breakfast at a hotel to find her asleep in Jim's duffel bag . I guess she wanted to be sure she didn't get left behind.

Right before my 1st wife & I got divorced and things were pretty bad, I'd be lying on the sofa really depressed. Our cat would come over to me to sniff me (to make sure I was still breathing?) and then proceed to rub her head against mine while meowing softly. Really helped me a lot!

My Zoro has been wonderful too, when I've been depressed. He oozes love at those times and it helped(s) me too. My divorce has been final for three years, this month.
That reminds me of my divorce decades ago. I remember sliding down the kitchen counter onto the floor in a fit of depression and tears. My little pug, Sue Lee, came over and licked my hands and crawled over into my lap for snuggles. You gotta love your pets.

Konrad Lorenz ("King Solomon's Ring" and "On Aggression") related a story about a talking caged bird. Whenever someone got ready to leave, the bird would say, "Goodbye." They tried to fool the bird into believing they were leaving when they weren't. They would get up, say goodbye to the hosts, put on coats, etc. The bird never said goodbye until it was real. And they never figured out the cue the bird used.
