How much do you tip in restaurants?

"What would YOU have done?"
This past Saturday we were in Boston for a long weekend. We made a reservation for 4 for 8:30 pm at a very nice restaurant in the North End. I checked in with the hostess about 8:20, while the family went to Mike's Pastries for treats ( yummm). OK- after multiple check-backs w/o results, we were finally seated a bit AFTER 9:30 pm...standing outside for all of this time and starved to death
How would you have reacted re: tips or any other elements of the meal experience? I gave a normal +15% tip for the very good meal/ service, but later wished that I had asked for some sort of accommodation from "the management"...since none was offered

Restaurants that pool are few and far, so if a host gives u a bad attitude dont blame the server. A server has to pay a percentage of his/her sales to bus/foodrunner/bar REGARDLESS of weather or not him or her got tiped. In other words if you had a check of $150 and leave nothing beacuse the host made you wait those poeple have to take money from theirwallets to pay what they owe the crew. Also keep in mind that it boils down to integrity on weather or not some one decides to teach you a lesson on your "clam chowder." So give your bad attitude after you have your food in front of you. p.s. spell check is down.

I agree, I have worked in the Restaurant Biz for years and I have never been in one where tips are pooled to all emps, night club & bar may do this between bar tenders. And you (as a server) tip out Bussers, Bar tender, Bar back by a % of sales not % of tips and the expo/hostis is normally a flat rate
(Like $5). If you have a bad experence other than service (long wait, rude hostis) ask to see the manager. The Tip you give a server ahould be based on his/her performance.

It truly depends upon the business involved. If it is a small diner and a bill < $5 I tip @ $!/person served. Bar service $2 the first drink and depending upon the size of the pour (scotch on the rocks) will either generate additional tips or lack there of. Most restrurants are at 15% for average service. If service is shoddy 10% great service 20 or 25%.
Most other services @ 15%.
Bell hops @ $1 or $2 per bag. Valet parking $2.
On a cruse I will tip the head of house keep on my deck $25 the first day. I ask that fresh ice and water are maintained and that extra towles are placed in the room. I have never run out of ice/towles/water or anyother service doing this.
