Hunter S. Thompson
I just found out that not only was HST on the phone with his wife when he shot himself, but his son, daughter in-law and SIX YEAR OLD grandson were also in the house with him!
What a self-centered turd! Too bad it didn't happen earlier.

There isn't a polite way for me to reply to your post so I won't say anything except that you shouldn't be so judgemental.
Rob,
Some things are subtle and nuanced, some special and understandable only to those who are involved. This is neither. I believe in right and wrong, and this is just plain wrong.
That being said, my last comments were not needed. But after reading the story in the paper that essentially romanticized his action, that is how I felt.

HST proved that to the end "It's all about me". The manner of his suicide just confirms that.
I feel sorry for his family not for him.
On another note, anyone who went over to John Denvers house and shoots his stereo can't be all bad....."Rocky Mountain High"
I wonder if Doonesbury will go to his funeral if anyone bothers to give him one.

I've read most of what Thompson wrote and always enjoyed it. BUT, I have to agree that his act was thoroughly selfish and thoughtless. I am not even talking about the act of the suicide itself but the act of doing it with his son, daughter-in-law and grandson in the house and his wife on the phone. That is so wrong on so many levels. How must that child feel (or the adults for that matter) to find a bloody corpse in the next room. I used to be very into ballistics and shooting and have read extensively on the effects of gunshot wounds. I have seen very graphic pictures of self-inflicted shotgun wounds and they are NOT pretty. Definitely not cool.
