Hyphenated names, keeping maiden name
Have you recently heard of anyone getting married where the couple uses both of their last names with a hyphen?
I know this was something that occurred in the past, but hadn't heard of being done recently until someone mentioned the possibility this week, I thought it was kind of weird.
I know some women use their maiden name along with married name and some don't assume the husband's name at all.
I know some women who are divorced and re-married use the ex's last name as a middle name in order to identify themselves better with their children.
And I know a woman who divorced, re-married, divorced and resumed using the last name of her first husband so she'd have the same last name as her kids.
And of course some women resume their maiden name after a divorce if they didn't have children, or perhaps even it they did.
Whew!
So, just curious, what do the women you know (or you yourself) do about changing/not changing names when getting married, or divorced?

I hyphenated my maiden name with my ex's when we got married, in 1984. After a few years of that, I just quit using my maiden name and went with his last name, like our kids. Once we got divorced, I kept his last name, since it's my kids's last name and I didn't want to go change all my documents. Matter of fact, I did get my social security card changed to keep his last name, and drop the hyphenated one, just to make it easier on my kids when I croak.

I have four sisters. Only one of us uses our maiden name along with her spouse's name. She started doing that when she became an attorney.....

that would be my wife.
she did the hyphenated last name deal her maiden name- my surname.
the first year we were married it hung up our taxes becuase she put her name in first.
it viewed the hyphen as an error and just threw the form out.

My social security card and voter registration had the hyphenated name all run together as one word. It was a pita. I liked my maiden name and didn't want to give it up entirely.

Would you have used a hyphenated name? Add hers your surnames together with the hyphen, of course.
it was a last minute compromise.

I know a couple who married at least 15 years ago now - his last name was Jones, hers was Low, the both use the last name of: Jones Low.
I kept my last name when I married. Although my last name was not the one I was born with - it was my middle name and I hated it as a kid for being "weird".
I dropped my "born with" last name in my 20s and went with with what I have now. The worst mangling people do to it, is add an extra "m" sometimes.
