^^ When you're doing what you WANT to do, it's just like being retired.

I'd love to not be working. But I'm afraid of outliving my savings.

We'd love to bail at 62, heck we'd love to bail soon, but with no employer pension and no portable health insurance it just won't happen. The most we can hope for is a less demanding job for Rick (a 40 hour week would be like a vacation for him) when he is 62, but one that provides health insurance until the magic Medicare age of 65.

I'm not holding my breath. I see both of us working for some time to come.

No doubt if I quit now, I would have to sell the house and probably settle for a small condo and the cape house. I may even have to sell the cape house. But if I can squeeze out 5 more years, then I'm all set. But in this economy, I may not get 5 more years. Who knows???

I have told my story before. I never gave retirement a seconds thought until I hit 59. I had a great working environment (I actually had it made) but after nearly 34 years with the same company it just wasn't satisfying anymore. I studied all I could get my hands on for a year. A week after turning 60, I retired. I do not have a single regret. Two of my friends from work did the same, they feel the same. One just had to be doing something, so he's now a township supervisor. I had more than enough hobbies and interests to just enjoy it. The other has become a baby sitter for grandkids! Hell, I'd rather be working than do that. Everyone's different. Bill, based on your love of water and cars, I think you'd fill in your time easily. Not everyone can do that. We never 'upsized', so we never needed to 'downsize'.

Well two years ago, my wife asked me how long I would work before retirement. I told her that I would work until Pall laid me off. Well, I am being laid off tomorrow and with the economy in the toilet and our investments down 30 - 40%, I cannot retire.

I thought that I would be out of work for 6 months easily, but am finding that with my engineering sales background, I am still in demand (somewhat). I have a job offer in Houston, but am continuing to look as it would be a pretty big decrease from my current income. I am finding a number of opportunities that could turn into offers within the next couple of weeks, but we shall see.

At this point, since Pall has been so kind (NOT) with their severance package, and the state of our investments, I will have to work at least 5 more years now, and maybe 10.

We relocated and that helped a lot.

I suspect I'll always be working unless I hit a lottery ( unlikely since I almost never play, which by the way, only slightly reduces my chances.)

I just like my toys too much.

Wow, John - sorry to hear that. My bro's company (Caterpillar dealer) has laid off a bunch of peeps, too. The economy out in AZ has not been great, to say the least. Keep your options open as long as you can, and good luck!!
