What's YOUR criteria for true leadership in any organization

I thought of this while surfing the Community Organizer's Forum a few minutes ago. There are sometimes strong differences of opinion there, but I realized...hey....these are the leaders of the s2ki.com communities

One of the characteristics of a leader is the willingness to advocate for a particular position on a topic...and it may not always be the easy one. What other traits distinguish a leader from the pack

That you try hard, listen to your peers, talk to your peers and converse about things, share your knowledge, and teach them things that they did not know. Cheer them on when something is wrong, and stuff like that. You do not always have to be the best at something to be a leader, but it would be nice.

You must have the trust and respect of those you are supposed to be leading.

Brant hit this one right on the head. In all the years I managed employees in my job, probably the major thing I wanted and, for the most part, got was respect. I might not have been liked by everyone, but that was not the important thing for me. Unfortunately, leaders do have to make unpopular decisions sometimes, but that is also a requirement of leadership. I would add inspiring others as a another quality of an effective leader.
