List of new cars with manual transmissions
#11
I'm actually surprised to see so many. Less than 6% of the cars produced are produced with manual transmissions and less than 18% of the people driving cars know how to drive manual transmissions.

Long live the Civic Si. It's only available with a manual transmission.

A year or so ago, I made the decision to buy an automatic for the first time in my life. I've owned two other automatic cars in the past but neither one was really my choice or preference. One was my first car which my parents bought for me, and the second was a car I bought for next to nothing from a roommate when I was cash strapped and had few other options. Since then, I've always driven a manual car.
This brings me to the only car I deliberately purchased as an auto. My current daily driver is now an automatic. It's a DCT, so it does have a clutch instead of a torque converter, but for all intents an purposes, it's an automatic. I bought this because not only does it bring livability to a car that I spend time in stuck in traffic and stop and go driving, but it out-performs a manual in every way other than enjoyment. Not only does my DCT beat a manual in just about every measure, but conventional automatics are now frequently better as well.
As an enthusiast, I also bought the DCT car as an experiment. I wanted to know if better was good enough for me. If we're talking about a sports car, it isn't in my opinion. It's fast and novel, but it is not nearly as engaging. That's just my take though, I think this varies quite a bit by person and possibly even more by generation. We've come to a point in time where a manual transmission is the lesser choice. I think that as time goes on, the fun factor that I value so greatly will matter less and less to people. If you are just comparing the two on capability and value, automatic wins, and we're seeing that reflected in the sales numbers and consequently... product offerings.

I've always felt there was advantages to both auto and manual, since we have always had both and still do.

I like the auto on the pickup (for towing, going off pavement, etc it is nice). But want my manual in my other cars. Sadly I am surprised there are so many on that list. But also glad to hear that 5/6 people likely would not make it down the street if they stole my manual tranny car :P
But I still say, a 16 yr old driving a manual has one less hand to txt with

In Feb. we traded my wife's 13 Si for a Subaru Impreza with automatic. She wanted a 4 door car to haul her lady friends around and felt it was time for her to get an auto. For the record we've been married for 40 years and have had too many cars/trucks to count yet this is the first automatic we've owned. The few times I've driven it it just seems like something is missing. Of course we live in the rural Adirondacks (thus the AWD) so traffic is not an issue. If we were city dwellers I'm sure we would have had an automatic a long time ago. Eric (elmmx5) made a great post.
