Default Lotus Elise is coming to America

Well, this isn't news anymore, but the details are very interesting, especially the price which is predicted to be just under $40,000. The car is called the best handling car in the world and comes with a 190 hp engine in a scant 1,975 pound package. If I was looking for a sports car right now, I think this would be it. Lets open up the discussion, Elise at $40,000 versus S2000 at $33,000 and you are in the market right now. Which one would you buy and why?

I have always been partial to Lotus, and this car gets back to what it is all about.................my S2000 is my everyday car, and the Elise, I think, would be a stretch as a daily driver...........but as a second or third car, I'd be all over it................the styling dosen't do much for me, but then I have yet to see one in person.....let alone drive one.

I liked what I saw when the S2000 first came out, but it was that first drive that told me I needed one..............I suspect the Elise would have the same effect on me................just not sure I can find a spare 40 grand lying around...............

I've only seen the Elise in pictures, but I'm cool to owning one because:

A- It looks ugly

B-I prefer front-engined cars (this is why I don't own a few dozen Porsches)

C- I'm still leary of British build quality

I've seen one in person and I like the looks. My S isn't my daily driver either so for me that would not be an important consideration. For those using the sports car for transportation, it could be critical. Build quality is a question mark, but I don't think that would stop me here for a number of reasons.

I know it is getting a Toyota engine and that is a plus but still, I agree with Paul.

The lotus elise looks wierd. Not something Batman would drive, But I could definetly see Robin, the boy wonder tooling around in the elise. It sorta reminds me of a kit car with a General Motors design influence. I think in ten years The elise will look very dated. I am sure it is a great car. But the outside looks really do nothing for me. I might even be a little embarrassed to drive around in what looks like a superhero car...well at least a wanna be superhero. It sorta is a "cheap" looking supercar. But I am sure after one drive in an elise I would smile alot.

I drove a 2001 Elise last winter in Switzerland. As raw as it is, the S2000 is a better product all around. Every bump in the Elise, you're looking out the rear view thinking you broke a part off. You overlap each other if two sit in the car, and try getting into it! No options, and not even floor mats.

Sure it's fun to drive, but it's for sure unsafe feeling and it looks fantastic. I'll try to post some pictures of it. It's better looing than the Opel roadster. Elise has cool seats, brakes and wheels.

I've always wanted to own a Lotus. My first thought when I read about the new USA version Elise was that I'd get one to keep along side my S2000. But the more I think about it, I lean toward adding a second generation S2000 in a few years - right when they get ready to launch the third generation S2000. In thirty years, I hope to have a stock example of each version of S2000 built - a collection for display at car shows. Maybe by then I'll find an S500, S600, or S800 to add.
