Love affair w/ cars - When / How did it start for you?
Perhaps this has been bantered about already, but I was thinking of how it all started...
For me, I was a typical boy w/ Hot Wheels, slot cars, and model making planes, tanks, cars, etc.
Once mobility set in (bike) motion and the ability to master it was a boy's life (amazing I never broke any bones or got seriously injured).
Discovered the gasoline engine w/ a mini-bike w/ the ol' B&S 1/2 hp motor, top speed 15 mph? From there it was learning to drive in my early teens (private community in the Catskills) w/ the family Olds and Buick. On long trips home on empty highways, mom would let me sit in the center seat of the front bench and I would drive w/ my left foot and hand.
The teen years where heavily influenced by my buddy w/ a 74' MGB (the roadster virus began here)..there were a few detroit iron (74 Grand Ville Convert, 66 GTO convert, 72 Chevelle SS) and I could go on...
Like all loves won & lost...which cars did you wish you kept or bought when you could but never did and which ones did you regret ever buying?

my first phrase of words was "lots of cars" my mom said suddenly one day when we were in our car I was chillin and I said, Mommy!, lots of cars. It's all history from there. Many of my pictures when I was a child have me clutching on to a hotwheels car.
I'd fall asleep and my mom could only get the car out of my hand when I was in deep sleep.

Discovered the awe of cars working in my Uncles gas station / repair shop. This was in the late 50's early 60's. Nothing like the challenge of changing points/plugs/condenser/rotor/rotor cap/etc. and setting the timing with out getting your fingers zapped by sparks or the fan or burning them on a hot manifold.
Of the cars that I have had they all served a purpose when they were bought. The beaters got me through some very lean times. Makes me enjoy what I have now all the more.

Reminds me of watching my buddy F balance the SU's on the 'B'...and the time the Goat slipped off the jack and nearly flattened J...mom was always complaining about the driveway turned garage (in my circle my family was the only one that didn't live in an apt).

1965, I'm 10 years old and my brother gets home from the Army. He is driving a Jaguar XK120 towing an XK140. From there, I'd need about 10 mb of computer space to tell the rest of the story. But that intro says it all, so for once I won't be such a wind-bag.

As a kid in grade school, I drew: (1) pictures of cars and (2) plans of houses.
#1 became a passion for cars (not so much sports cars)...but never really fulfilled until the S2000 arrived almost 4 years ago
#2 led to deciding at about age 14 that I wanted to be an architect. Have been there/ done that for the past 32 years since getting out of grad school

Hmm...lets see.
As a child of 5 or 6, I was given my fathers Matchbox car collection, most of which I destroyed playing "crashes" Needless to say, I was like a kid in a candy store when I first laid eyes on the box of 50+ shiny little wheelers. Cars were the toy of choice for me. No Action men, no board games. Just cars. Heck, I used to even sneak a couple to school with me even though toys "from home" were not allowed.
From then, I took a keen interest in helping my dad wash and wax the car. He pointed out the two bucket method to me, and always cautioned me against waxing in the direct sun.
At about 9 years of age, he would take me on rural roads, while I would sit on his lap and steer as he navigated the manual 4 speed transmission of first, our 1974 Datsun 120Y, and then later our new 1984 Ford Escort 1.3 Ghia.
Oh the days of childhood. How I long for them again......

1962-I was a twelve year old kid walking home from school. My older sisters boyfriend passed by in a brand new white Triumph TR3. He offered me a ride home. I couldn't see over the dashboard, but the gauges, the shift, sitting on the floor, the ride the noise, the wind. I had to have one.
1966-I was the only kid in my drivers ed class to take the lectures seriously. My presentation was on "Automobile safety and Defensive Driving". I spoke for 20 minutes, could have talked for an hour, the teacher wouldn't let me. The other students would've killed me.
1967-Passed my road test on the first try. Had to wait until November to drive (17 with drivers ed in New York). Got my license. Shared my father's 1961 Chevy Impala (6 cylinder, powerglide transmission) with my older sister. Tasted freedom. Never looked back.
1970-Couldn't afford a car so I bought a Honda Motorcycle to commute to the City University of New York. Rode it all winter and part of the summer. Woke up in the intensive care section of the hospital. Never rode a motorcycle again. Went back to taking the subway to school.
1972-Graduated from college, started working full time. Saved $3,200 for a new British Racing Green 1972 MGB. I had wanted a car like this since that ride in the TR3 in 1962. Loved it, and have loved two seat roadsters ever since.
1983-Sold my 1952 MG-TD and my Fiat X-1/9, got married and bought a sensible Honda Accord. According to my father, it was the first "real" car I owned. Hondas & Toyotas followed.
2002-Bought my S2000. Rekindled my sportscar fire. Love owning it, caring for it and everything about it. Not bad, 2 MGs and an S2000. Quite a love affair.
