Masters
Personally I have never had any interest to play golf. In fact, the only time I've ever been to a golf course is to visit the 19th hole. So I even surprised myself by watching the last several holes of the Masters. I kept waiting for the announcers to really jinks Tiger as they had him winning with at least two or more holes to go. It clearly was an emotional win for him and for golf. Congrats to him and you golf fans.
I was asked to join company teams for years, bought clubs for my kids, but I grew up playing pool and found it similar to golf at least in some ways. |
I watched most of it. I have not liked Tiger as a person, but he certainly made golf and sports history today. Amazing...
|
I thought he really looked old when he took off his hat! Those wild and crazy days have aged him.

He may have looked old but he beat a field of young gunslingers almost 1/2 his age .He still intimidates his opponents with his experience and focus. Greatest come back in sports history. And, he has been more interactive with the fans, signing autographs for the kids and high fiveing. He could beat Nicklaus's record with 4 more major wins. I watch him for his great golf not his personal life.

I understand that and a large part of me agrees. Why do we think every superstar has to pass some high standard? Appreciate their skill and who cares what they do in their off hours! (Did I rock the boat with that one).
|
Well, that is fine when you are viewing it as an adult. But these stars have a responsibility IMO to present themselves as honorable and respectable people to kids who look up to them. Unfortunately, some don't.
|
When we do not have a majority of kids in broken homes, lots of them due to their parents having affairs or putting their own interests in front of their kids, then I will start saying we hold celebs (who live much less attached to the real world) to a higher standard ;) Parents today and society as a whole are a worse influence on our kids than a pro golfer who cheats on his wife.
With that, I do watch some golf now and then when I am in front of the TV and it is on. Pretty cool how he did in this one. Missed it due to instructing a novice autocross school :P |

I have played a few times. It is a lot of fun, but very hard and yes, pricey :P I suck, so I normally hit one decent shot that makes me want to try again lol. But instead, we save the money and just play disc golf. Much cheaper and much more fun for me! I probably fit in more there than on a regular golf course..

Someone bet $85K and won $1.2M at 14-1.
|
I'm super pleased Tiger won, he really changed golf 20+ years ago and brought a new group of viewers in, and more younger people to play the game. I'm hopeful he keeps playing and winning for many years to come.
Everyone is human, even athletes. |
One thing cannot be questioned: Woods is on the Mt. Rushmore of men's golfing greats along with Jones, Hogan, Palmer and Nicklaus.
Sad to say I can't name a similar list of women, which is due to my shortcomings land that of the sports press, not the fault of the greatest women golfers. |

Same here.....did try it twice, didn't care for it. Took too much time.....and is rather pricey if I recall.

I don't play golf, although I own a set of clubs that came from a big-box sporting goods store. I've played five or six times, each game worse than the last. I took a lesson once and realized that if I really practiced and took a lot of lessons, and played the game regularly, I could become a mediocre player. But I have no interest in making that time commitment.
For me, the Tiger Woods story is more about diversity than anything else. |
I don't play golf anymore and don't follow it. I am impressed by Tigers return to glory!

You may find this interesting!
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas...=1000435010573 There are four things that I am happy that I never got involved in: Smoking, Gambling, Golf, and boating! On the other hand I have spent many thousands of dollars over the last sixteen years attending S-2000 meets. So I guess that everyone has their vices? |
I can't claim to play golf, but I do hit a ball around the grass. Last summer I joined a statewide group of retirees and their main thing is golf. Mostly 9 holes at a nearby course that costs me about $15 if I walk and don't use a cart. Gives me some exercise and I have met some nice fellas. I finally have a handicap after playing off and on for many years, and it's 36, so that should tell you something. It's still fun and madly frustrating.
|
Played a few times when I was in my 20's but never cared for it.
Boss I had for a summer job in high school liken it to: "chasing a white pill around a field until you find a bar". Have watched a handful of matches over the years on TV. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.s2k...ea24704f11.jpg |
I'm really surprised how many on here are like me and don't play the game.

My ex played golf quite a bit. Unfortunately, he did not have the temperament for it. The Latin thing. Broke a number of clubs.

I've played pretty much all my adult life, although I have not swung a club in anger (or any other state of mind) for over a year now. I was never very good, usually shooting in the high 90s and low 100s. But I almost always enjoyed playing thanks to three things: the company of others in my group, spending time outdoors, and beer.
These days i play pool in an APA league. It isn't outdoors but it checks the other boxes, and I am better at pool than I ever was at golf. That's a pretty low bar but my league ranking puts me just a tad above average while I never even bothered to maintain a formal handicap in golf. |
well I can offer a slightly different perspective.
First I love the game. it provides a wonderful intellectual diversion and a good look in the mirror. The great Bobby Jones once said, golf is a game played on the 5 inch fairway between the ears. And speaking of Bobby Jones, the course he created is rather special. especially when viewed firsthand. |
^ Time to come clean!

Used to try to play mainly for business. Only game where you can play more and get worse.
A few beers and some friends is the only way. Otherwise, I can be frustrated and pissed without leaving home. But if one has tried the game you can appreciate what the Pros do. " they play a game which I am not familiar with" ( or something like that") |
I shot 77 twice which were my best rounds ever .If f the pros teed off on the whites where I do they would shoot under 60.
|
That's great Ray.
I've always been an enthusiastic golfer and love the game but that love is one-sided. I was out of work about 15 years ago and played a lot of golf. My scores got down to a similar range. Once I started work again, poof the magic was gone. When we were playing the whistling straights and Erin Hill courses, site of PGA and US open respectively, I was putting 105's on the card. from the middle tees and not the back tees and they would shooting sub-par. Very Humbling. Not a bad thing for an arrogant dipsh^t. Like a glass of water in Death Valley, any dreams of the Senior tour evaporated a long time ago. |

We have a guy, who's in our league, who routinely shoots in the upper 60's.
sadly it's a nine hole league. |
I've never played nor watched the game. I just never got into it. To this day, I don't know what people see in the game.
I was once having lunch with a female partner at a mid sized accounting firm. I asked her how she became a partner. Her reply was quick and to the point. She looked at me and said, "I learned how to play golf". I guess an lot of deals and relationships are made on the golf course. I suppose for a lot of people golf is an extension of their business. |

Rob there is a funny thing about golf.
Ultimately you are playing against yourself and nature. What other sport do you call penalties on yourself. The great Bobby Jones said golf is played on the 5 inch fairway between the ears. It is also said Golf is like a pair of bicycle shorts, it reveals a lot about a man. It is about integrity. A man who is willing to cheat a golf is willing to cheat himself and anything or anyone else as well. Perhaps the most beguiling aspect of the sport is the demands it puts on you mentally and how effective it is at occupying your mind. If you want to be good at golf you have to focus; on the wind, the grass, the lie of the ball, the slope of the ground. If you want to hit it well; you must be relaxed, the swing must flow gently from within, smooth yet controlled. Those two elements demand your attention and work or home and any of the other crap can't intrude, they must cease and be put out of mind. There is an exhilaration that comes with a perfect strike, utterly effortless and smooth, watching that little orb rise off into the distance floating towards the pin. I'm not sure done well there is anything more therapeutic. Golf has a lot of intrinsic values that reflect well on life. One must be patient. There will be times when a perfect shot will land on a an unseen twig and take an insane bounce. There will be times when a gawdawful hack will bounce out of the trees to the center of the fairways. Life isn't fair, neither is golf. acceptance is critical to success. In golf there are various risk rewards trades with every shot. Can you carry over that bunker or stream or marsh area into the wind and face a lost ball or is it better to take the stroke and lay up? You might get a birdie either way. it is important to know yourself and be honest with yourself about your skills! The shots behind are already on the card, only the next shot matters. Keep forward looking The list goes on and on. I wish I had had the opportunity to really learn the game as a younger man. A bad day at golf is still better than a great day at the office. |
Rob, I learned years ago that many owners and partners of CPA firms that bragged about their long working hours were actually counting and including the hours playing golf with clients.

You paint a very poetic, romantic picture of the game. For me though, it always seemed like a waste of time, hardly worth the time and effort spent learning it. I'm not knocking it, it's just not for me. Like everthing else, I suppose those who like it, love it. Those who don't simply don't and can't understand what the appeal is to others. |
or paraphrasing,
"why climb the mountain?" because it there, doesn't really answer the question. It doesn't respond to the obligation one has to test oneself, to define who or what they are. Golf is no different. We all define ourselves in different ways. Some never have desire to take the test. |
