Default Mitch Miller dies at the age of 99

Mitch Miller died at the age of 99. Do you remember "Sing Along With Mitch"? It was all the rage in the early 1960s.

Mitch Miller, rest in peace.

His entourage visited the apartments my parents lived in in Baltimore. My Dad supervised the construction of the building which was one of the first high rises near the downtown area (Sutton Place). He then took over the maintenance of the building and he and my Mom had a beautiful apartment there. I was in the Navy when Mitch Miller visited but Dad and Mom met him and Leslie Uggams who he was introducing to the show. She was a beautiful and talented singer. Dad said he was a very nice person.

The basis, I believe, for karaoke.

As I recall, most of the music was decades-old standards.

I wonder what a show like that would air now. Old Beatles songs? HPH

Loved his beard! It was known as the "Itch Along with Mitch".

RIP, Mitch Miller.

That is exactly the formula that Mitch Miller discovered. In a time of changing music you can attract a huge audience simply by playing old standards. People like the comfort of hearing and singing old, familiar tunes.

^^ I grew up with Mitch Miller. My parents tuned in to Sing Along with Mitch and the entire family was in bliss. RIP, Mitch.

My wife and I accidently tuned in athe PBS staton last night. They featured Gogi Grant, Patti Page, Pat Boone, The Four Aces, The Crew Cuts, Teresa Brewer and lots of the recording stars that were popular right before the advent of Rock and Roll. Some of them still sounded great and I wonder how many recording artists of today will be performing 50-60 years from now. Very nostaligic as I can remember my aunt and uncle listening to these artists in the mid 50's on their new 45 RPM Record player. Mitch was a classic as well.

Until the news stories after his death, I didn't realize that he was a major force in the recording industry: he produced records for Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, and a number of others. Additionally, he put Leslie Uggams on network TV in an era when Nat Cole couldn't attract sponsors to keep his show on TV.

"Dying after a short illness at age 99" sounds like a pretty good end game to me.
