Val just had a squamous cell growth removed from her arm yesterday. I'm guessing it looks like Patty's pics from above. It went well - stitches come out in about 10 days.

"I don't know the details yet. I'm sure at some point he will send an email if he is able. The area was at the base of the brain stem so maybe not. He had to make a difficult choice between surgery and not. The chances of his having another bleed would have increased 10% a year, so he chose the surgery. I believe the surgery itself carried a 90% success rate. But he has a long recovery period ahead (6-12 months of rehab), at least according to his email he sent before the surgery. He was having issues with balance/stability and nausea. Maybe he will beat that estimate. I hope so. "
I posted the above in LB's surgery thread, regarding my relative who had brain surgery last week. He had been nauseous and unstable after a brain bleed (stroke) in January. I received an email from his wife today. He is still nauseous and has a headache. As it turns out, when the surgeon got in there, he took a biopsy of the malformation in the brain and found it was melanoma, which can cause similar symptoms. So I moved it to this thread. He also has a couple of lesions in other parts of the body which need to be tested. This is very bad news. The wife was trying to be optimistic in her email, but it has to be a big blow. My research was not encouraging.
The bottom line is see your dermatologist regularly!! This has certainly inspired me to go more regularly. Even melanoma, if caught early, can be treated successfully. The key is early.

Stopped wearing the compression stocking today after almost six weeks. Wound has skin completely covering it now and looks good. Will keep band aid on it a bit longer for protection.

Deb, I am sorry to hear that your relative has passed away.
(It has been a little over a year ago that our friend passed away from Stage 4 Melanoma in May 2018.)
I'm glad to hear that your wound is healing well.
I hope that Val's wound is healing well, too. Please pass along our "thinking of you" wishes to her.

from 2019 when I had my Mohs surgery. Lots of detail here from me and others. When I went to my new dermatologist the other day, I had two biopsies. One I thought was harmless but the other seemed like another squamous cell carcinoma. Turns out both were benign.

From Ricks procedure a week ago. Outer arm near elbow Stitches come out Monday. Patricia his spot was similar in size to your and his incision seems to be about the same size. This spot had been frozen previously but of late it was like a sore that would come and go. She removed enough of it to biopsy at his check up. She did not send him for Mohs procedure. He got a call all margins good. He’s had other basal cells removed by this doc also one by a plastic surgeon and one by an ophthalmologist.

My sister had the regular surgery a few years ago on her forearm and it was a long incision like Rick’s. They definitely make sure those margins are clear!
