Nice job, Jerry! You are a better carpenter than I am.

My brother in law ( the civil eng) suggested I may have over built slightly

Nice work, Jerry. You are a real do it yourself guy.
Zip, our pressure treated deck lasted 20+ years, and the only reason we replaced it was due to railing issues and some installation issues. ( A little inexperience in deck building, back in the day). Not sure if current pressure treated woods have all those nice chemicals as they may not allow them as they did 20 years ago.
Not to hijack Jerry's thread, (I guess I am though) but we went with composite material, a bit newer product, and a tad more $ than trex. Of course our deck is about 1/4 the size of Jerry's. It was not a cheap project, but since we're not going anywhere, this is what we did. The new look really brightened the house. Love the railing system. George Bush's stimulus plan helped pay for that railing system.....
Even a door for kitty who likes to go under the deck

The main deck was already PT or I would have gone with a synthetic product.
It just didn't make sense to change only the stairs.

The white rails brighten up the deck.
Besides, by the time the PT lumber gives way, you'll have downsized anyway.

nice long weekend and a chance to work on it some more.
warning image for mature audiences....
slowly getting there.
Then I'll do the stairs on the other side and then it's on to the railings...
that really is the hard part.

looks good so far; don't fall - take it from one who's been there
