Default Need to replace a furnace

My son needs to replace his 28-year-old furnace. I found this is a really excellent article and well worth a complete read. (1) Explains fear tactics used to think you need a new furnace (2) Explains how a special camera is needed to tell if you actually have a cracked heat exchanger (3) Explains who does the install is way more important than what brand is installed since the number one reason for failures is an improper install (4) Explains why you can’t use customer rankings (5) Explains how many of the brands are actually duplicates with just a name change

Dave, I'm not disputing anything they said but...

we are a small, U.S. Veteran-Owned and operated HVAC business located in Southern California
what does someone in SoCal know about furnaces?
A/C they'd be my goto guys. heating?? eh maybe notso much.
For heating I want someone from elkhart lake, or green bay or Grand forks. you know, nice mild temerate climates.
Or maybe one of Emil's buddies.

Replaced my A/C and furnace last year with Carrier units. I am a former employee of United Technologies, ) so they gave me a decent rebate. Even the local utility company sent me a rebate check for upgrading to a more efficient unit.

I think over the years I've almost always had Carrier units. My current one is, too. Never really had any issues.

You can now purchase endoscope cameras that are battery powered and paired to your iPhone or Android by WiFi for not more than $25 that work great. I have one with a 1.5 meter lead that's got high resolution and is self illuminating with 8 LED on the tip for $22.

We never used a camera. We would block the flue and the air intake around the burners after putting a smoke bomb (special vegetable based) the combustion chamber and look in the plenum for smoke. Sometimes we would pressurize the combustion chamber with a lower speed/low volume blower and smoke.

In my last house we had a Amana 96% effecent furnace (two stage/variable speed DC blower). It was combined with a Trane A/C unit and an Aprilaire humidifier.

I've always had Carrier units as well, plus the local supplier is only two miles away, should I need any service.

Another common issue/fox is replacing a blown capacitor in the outdoor fan unit for a/c. Easy.

I’ve got an hb Smith boiler that is over 25 years old and operates very well. The oil co. sends a tech once a year and they do an inspection cleaning, they are in fact coming today to do it. I had asked the tech about replacing it and he said a lot of times they just replace the main parts inside they don’t have to replace the whole unit.
