new cool job got to be young again
Well everyone after 10months of layoff from my IT career i am back among the employed. Checkout www.mooseboats.com . I will be doing all the electrical / mechanical installations for a new line of navy patrol boats. ie chassis wiring all accessories like radar / sonar, motors, jet drives.
A practical example of the war on terroism fueling the economy!! Can't wait to go for test ride when 1st boat is in the water sometime in november. 50 knots+
Of course iam no longer in my 20's or 30's when i was a professional mechanic but at least ihave been weight lifting and mtn biking every single day since my layoff to keep my spirits up and body together.
The sad thing is that it's goodbye (good riddence?) to my IT career as it will be some time b4 jobs become plentiful enough to pay like they used to maybe when i'm in my 60's or 70's and i'm looking 4 some very part time stuff although i'm told i will be able to go independent installing marine navigation systems for well heeled boat owners as a result of experience from my new gig
and that could be cool.
A couple of months and I can start buying some go fast parts and maybe become an s2ki member again!

Hey Ross - The IT market has really sucked recently. Not as much here in DC, but bad enough. You deserve a lot of credit for biting the bullet and moving your life in a different direction. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for all the good wishes. I am real excited about this work and saying goodbye to IT. 20 years of mostly IT support work has gotten me a little burnt on the office world. OTOH I am a little fearful of starting a blue collar job at 55. I'm sure many of you can relate to waking up with the pains of middle age even if you keep yourself in great shape as I do. For me, It's back pain every AM until I slip into my spa! I last worked as an auto mechanic in 1981 and I put in 8 weeks as a trainee electrician a couple of months ago until that work ran dry. I really liked the construction work but starting out at my age was definitely intimidating
Now at least I will be doing all new clean work in the boat hull and won't need to be crawling thru hot dirty attics or crawl spaces! I'm sure there will be other challenges.

Ross,
I bet you'll find you really like having a life again. No more beeper or cell phone interrupting your life because the IT department wants you at their beck and call 24/7/365.
