Did the Patriots get enough for Jimmy G? There's a lot to it - New England Patriots Blog- ESPN
No head-scratching necessary. 1.) Didn't franchise tag him despite apparent necessity. 1a.)Would have warranted finding a back up to Garoppolo 2.) Kraft "brilliantly" waited until mid-year, offering the least amount of leverage. 2a.) Kraft double-downed on the lack of leverage and didn't talk to any other team.
On the other hand, "Getting rich is great, but quarterbacks want to play football."
My beef with the York family is that while they ran WAY under the cap for 2018 to get the money to pay Jimmy G, they still have to go put together the rest of the team. . . and with $75M guaranteed for the QB, expect some goofy signing bonuses from both the O-line and the defense. It's practically a $75M bet on a collarbone break by week 11.

Quite simply the Pats knew they couldn't afford both Jimmy G and Tom Terrific on the same payroll.
