Oh $hit moment

In case you missed it . . . The IndyCar race in Detroit got off to a weird start Sunday when GM VP Mark Reuss crashed the $100,000+ 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with 755hp pace car into the wall delaying the race at over ½ hour. There are videos of it all over the internet.

I heard about that....must have been a "tad" embarrassing.

That won’t help the sales of the ZR-1.

Ouch! Saw the replay on the local news - what a driving error… but nothing like the 1971 Indy Pace Car crash. The Indy pace car drivers need to be well qualified before they’re set behind the wheel. Really.

It looked to me like the car got light as the roadway fell away at the apex of the turn. Then the rotation of the rear wheels slowed just after the car's rotation started which indicated to me that he lifted off the gas at that time. Not good.

I don't recall seeing that clip before from 1971. I took a break from going to every Indy event after 1967 - busy starting a family and adjusting to married life! If I knew about it, I've forgotten. Thanks for the link.

Announcers said there was a serious bump at that turn. GM says weather was a factor but I didn't see it as having any impact other than a very hard short rain (if they got what we got in the AM) that washed off some grip. I felt for Mark, as he is one of good 'car guys' in upper management; not a bean counter. Also, it was reported he's done the Celeb Pace Car Driver thing several times at that track.

They put the regular race-time pace car driver (Oriol Servia) into the replacement pace car for the delayed race startup. I imagine Reuss was a little shook up especially with both air bags going off.
