I had it in my left heal several years back, so I know how painful it can be. I went to foot specialists; had custom orthotics made, tried heel wedges, etc. As best I can recall, what worked for me was tossing out all my shoes and buying new ones. I now replace my New Balance walkers in a very short time, perhaps as soon as 4 months.

These days I have two sets of $400 hard orthotics that I wear to deal with a old ankle injury. I get a little more tenderness in the left heal in the one set than the other after taking walks, since they can't be a perfect 100% match.

If my problem is the same as the OP's, I have a solution, really cheap too.

First is the tennis ball, roll it under your foot. (I continue doing this even when I'm not having issues)
Second, when above isn't enough. Freeze a small water bottle, and roll that back and forth twice a day, the second time right before bed when your foot will be up (level). The cold helps the swelling which is part of the problem. I'm doing it currently, 15-30 minutes at a time, while I'm having coffee or watching TV. The second day was a noticeable improvement.

Just had it for months. No shots. I watched YouTube videos to stretch, I bought the studded balls and compression braces. Best thing for me were inserts for all my shoes. No more problems. I can even run again.

Thanks everyone. Most everything that has been mentioned has been tried. Tonight I am trying the bourbon therapy. It will still hurt but who cares!

Easy, inexpensive, fix. No more shots.

Went through this a few years ago when I switched to a "higher end" NB running shoe than the model I had used for many years. Saw a podiatrist, he wanted to do orthotics and all the other stuff mentioned here. I balked at the cost and mentioned Birkenstocks. He said they did the same thing.
So, I did do the Birkenstocks (I like the Arizona model- easy on and off) and I was cured. That was it. I keep wearing them out and get the new ones every couple of years. It is almost ALL I wear in the summer. In the winter you can add socks.

I have found that the arch support in your shoes, sneakers, makes the biggest difference in how the heel feels. Get the pressure off the heel. I place the inserts I buy for my sneakers under the innersole. They made a huge difference the first time around. I'm not sure why I have a little flare going on now, but it's tolerable. I just bought some shoes for work. Earth Origins and the insert says welltek system. I can feel the arch support in them. It feels a bit weird, but ultimately it makes a huge difference. As mentioned, I can't wear flat shoes, not matter how cute they are....

Dave, do you replace your sneakers often? You wear sandals in the summer, do they have some kind of arch support? Rick was just having issue with his feet, I bought him three new pair of sneakers, tossed out the inserts that they came with, replaced them with some from Dr. Scholl's, and his feet are much better.

My nephew is an avid runner and works for Saucony. He recommended an insert that could help if my foot didn't feel better. I'll find out the name in case you want to give it a try.

This is the company:

Everyone's experience with plantar's is a bit different. I'll share mine. I've had it since I was in my late 40s. It started while I had been wearing loafers for about six months. At its worst I had injections that did no good at all. A change of shoes and addition of inserts and an inexpensive brace solved it for me.

Now I never wear loafers or sandals with flat soles. I wear old-school lace-up dress shoes to work with added insoles. Nothing fancy on the insoles, Dr Scholl's products work fine. New Balance sneakers, also with aftermarket insoles for walking/running. I do some stretching exercises before I go on the treadmill or out for a jog. Mostly the stuff where you stand with one foot about two or three feet ahead of the other. Keep the back leg straight, keep your foot flat on the floor and then bend your knee on the opposite leg and lean forward to stretch the tendon. The ball-under-the-foot exercises and similar therapy exercises did nothing for me.

And the very best low cost item out there that takes care of everything for me when I have a flare up is this:

I also wear it when I go on the treadmill.

There are similar products out there. but I like the adjustable straps that allow me to make it fit snugly without cutting off circulation.
