Default Radar Detectors

I don't think I've seen a thread for this topic before.

I think Matt in VA mentioned radar detectors are illegal in Virgina.

It would be nice to know what other states (especially the New England and Mid Atlantic areas) may be on the "no radar detectors allowed" list, before we hit the road this summer.

Thanks for any info you all have!.

The link below is useful:

Click Here for US Radar Detector Laws

Canada
It is illegal to take automobile radar detectors
into the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, and
Manitoba or into the Yukon and Northwest
territories. The police will confiscate radar
detectors, whether in use or not, and may
impose fines up to $1000.

I could never see the logic in radar detectors. Sure, they keep you from being arrested for speeding. But they allow you to break the law.

I look at it this way - I supply the money which is used to set speed limits and pay the salary of the cop who enforces the law. It just doesn't make any sense to me to pay yet MORE money to enable me to break that law.

Sure I drive over the limit most of the time. But it is within a range at which I wouldn't be awfully frightened of passing a cop car. By the way, I've never been in a state where the drivers are more afraid of the cops than here in Florida. They slow down to about ten miles per hour below the limit when they spot a squad car.

Maybe some of us have different experiences from yours. My own experience is that it is never really safe to pass a police car while driving at or above the speed limit. I particularly remember being in a group of cars held up by a police car going at 55, sometimes slowing down to 54 or 53. Eventually one of the other cars stayed at 55 and edged past the police car when the police car wasn't quite maintaining the speed limit. That car was pulled over as soon as his front bumper passed the police car's.

I'd also note that my money doesn't pay the salaries of policemen in other states, or in towns other than the one I live in. Not unless I get ticketed, that is.

It is not our intent to use a radar detector in order to pass police vehicles. The purchase of the radar detector is not so we can begin driving like the proverbial "bats outta he$$, as that is just asking for trouble.

We're hoping it just gives us a bit of notice as to what is out there. We'll call it some "insurance" against higher insurance rates.

Rick was stopped twice last summer, on a country road in a neighboring small town (no ticket), and if he/I can avoid being stopped, because we hear the the beep of a radar detector, we'll give it a try.
