We left coast and western car owners don’t know what heavy rust or corrosion is.

I remember my nephew from Cleveland showing me his 72 Mustang in 1988 that he was to restore. He opened the hood and I had to jump back for fear of a rust attack. I told him , “Strip your the interior, junk the car, purchase a the same car from California and then swap interiors”. No amount of money or efforts could salvage that car.

Buy a new car. Why put that much money into a 16 year old car? Oftentimes old cars are like bottomless pits. You end up throwing more and more money into it until you decide enough is enough and do what you should have done in the first place. This is probably the time to draw the line.

At 139,000 miles and 16 years, the car doesn't owe you anything. It's time.

What about a used subframe? Shouldn't be too much $.

I know a RSX subframe is only $100 used.

Da New Yawka:

That's one of the reasons I suggested he seek out an independent shop. Dealerships aren't noted for going out to find used parts when they can sell a new one. Independent shops are more likely to explore other avenues of approach.

That is the reason aircraft boneyards are not in the mid-west. They are in the Southwest.
California has no real mosquitoes, bitting flies, few fleas and ticks and no salt to melt snow. No rust. Just fruits and nuts.

Today I did a more through examination of my car. I jacked up all four corners and checked for rust, the car is solid. Here in Kentucky they use some type of mixture that is composed of by-products from the bourbon industry to melt the snow and ice. I believe that I have to worry more about my car becoming an alcoholic than rusting.

If you decide to fix it the rust repairs will never end like others have said this is an unfortunate part of living in the rust belt. I had to go through this with my last two Toyota trucks. My Tacoma had the frame recall done and even with the new frame and associated parts that go with it all equaling over 10k priced wholesale it started rusting all over again so I got rid of it. Things like the suspension and brakes rot out and it becomes a real safety issue.
Be cautious if you decide to venture up to Maine in your S this time of year weather tends to be unpredictable.
