Selling vinyl records

Now that we have decided to downsize we are getting rid of or selling stuff we take from house to house. My wife has a nice 45 and 33 1/3 record collection. Lots of 50's and early 60's music on the 45's (Most of Elvis's records and jackets). Some 50's but mostly 60 & 70's on the big records. Probably a couple hundred total. Has anyone ever experienced selling them. I have no idea what they are worth but I don't want to trash them as vinyl is making a comeback and we don't own a turn table to listen to them. There is one place in N.Y. that I talked to that has reps come to your house and evaluate your collection. I heard they are very professional and fair.

From my experience with just that, most record stores are interested in rock and pop starting from the 60s. They tend to pass on the 50s and earlier. Some interest in high quality/famous classical recordings.

Good luck. Let us know how the evaluation works out if you go that route.

I have a lot, too. I'd be interested in what you find out. I have not seen anything that indicates my stuff would be worth much, since I don't have any rare/pristine recordings.

I still have a couple hundred LPs and 2 turntables.

keeping mine.

Good luck but the collection is not going to be worth anywhere near what you think. I've sold collections three times, all from the 50s and 60s. The first time was back in the early 80s when I sold all my LP's except for maybe two dozen of my favorites. I did pretty good. The second time was maybe 10 years later, I sold all my 45's and didn't get much for them. The third time I sold my wife's collection just a couple years ago - it was a collection of 45’s, mostly from ‘60s, numbering about 185 records. Three-quarter of them are in their original jackets and sleeves, many very colorful. They were stored since new in record boxes with individual dividers between each sleeved record. All of her's were in mint condition. I checked with several online sites, etc. and there was no interest. Ended up selling the lot including the storage boxes to a bar owner for $50.

I sold mine to Half Price Books. Didn’t make much but I just wanted them gone.

In my opinion, you won't get a whole lot for the records. Vinyl is back in style again but everyone wants classic rock and hair bands. Those are bringing the premium prices right now. I have been collecting for years and my sources for $3 albums have dried up. All of the vintage stores have marked them up making them less desirable for me. I miss being able to thumb through boxes of records and walking out with 10 albums for $30. Now you have to pay $30 for one re-issued record since they are in style.

Thanks for the input. I agree they are not worth much. I am a little concerned about having someone come to the house from N.Y. to evaluate them. Might be a hit man.
