Haven't been up that way in a long time, but when I was in Maine, I loved Ogunquit and Boothbay Harbour. We took a day sailing trip from Boothbay that included a clam/lobster bake on an island. It was great!
Thanks for the tip! We will probably head down the coast - Penobscot Bay and south after a few days at Acadia.

Not sure how much time you have or how far west in NYS you plan to venture but the Finger Lakes region is a beautiful area. .....
Thanks, I have been to most of the NY places you mentioned on day trips from my Mother-in-Law's home in Johnson City, NY. (I like my Mother-in-Law, but after a few days, I'm ready for a day trip!)

Really, you cant go wrong hopping on US1 once you reach the Maine border. All the little coastal towns are awesome. If you are planning on going inland more, Rangely Lakes area or Baxter state park are good. (used to live there, can you tell) LOL

Thanks. I saw that place featured on one of the Food Network programs (Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives maybe ?) We'll look for it on Rt 1 if we are down that way. I have heard mixed reviews on driving Rt 1. Some say good things about scenery and attractions, others don't like the traffic and congestion. So in mid-September, once schools are back in session, what are the places to avoid, and what places to not miss on Rt1 ? (in addition to Reds)

Very true. If you are in no hurry, US1 is fine. If you want to get somewhere in a timely fashion, other ways are better. Other things not to miss: LL Bean store, tea & popovers at Jordan Pond Acadia National park, obviously shopping in Bah Hahbah (LOL) other than that, all the antique shops and other quaint things along the way.
