Show us your old stuff!

In another thread there was a mention of some of the stuff from a previous era being, well, ugly. ;) (Not said in so many words, we're too polite).

Anyway, dlq04 posted some pics of some lovely maple furniture. Here is some of my favorite furniture in the house. Mahogany furniture. I love the tones in the wood. Most of these items likely date back to the 30's or 40's, but that's just a guess. Rick's aunt (now deceased) gave us many of these items.

I "rescued" this desk from Rick's Mom's laundry room. The finish was a mess, the hinge for the drop part of the desk had been replaced and the wood had splintered, and one drawer was missing a knob. $250.00 at a local furniture re-finisher and I've got a beautiful desk.

Uncle Sam is waiting to hear from us.

I found this table in a local antique place and HAD to have it. The drawer works, and the drop leaves open.

Old sofas used to be much larger/likely taller than those we now buy. My guess is that this was an end table.

A drop leaf table we put in a corner of the living room. We have extra leaves for it, a custom pad to protect it, and it was used for holiday dinners until we got a larger dining room table.

A tall dresser in Granny's room. Mirror has beveled glass and some great carvings around it. I also have the matching dresser which is wider and shorter.

Carvings around the mirror

A few more.

A "junk" store find $25.00 and the guy made me a new seat. I've seen these same chairs at antique shops for $100+. I loved the carved rose.

I use this table as a "night stand" in Granny's room.

The bed was also given to us by Rick's aunt. Not sure if it's a "set", with the two dressers but it works for me. We have the foot board, too, but I didn't want to bother with it. It's safe in the attic.

That's it, and yes, those are little lace doilies on my tables, also known as "granny doilies" if you watch the HGTV channel. I like them, so no :rocket: my doilies!

BTW some folks buy antiques and like the distressed, aged look. Not me. I don't care if it technically de-values the furniture to have it refinished, however, I've been told that is the case only in rare items. I like the furniture to look almost new. The desk in the first post was refinished, and Rick touched up the top on the tall "end table". The small drop leaf table was refinished before I bought it, the other items are in original condition.

Very nice pieces, Lainey. I have my parent's 1950 mahogany bedroom set. One of these days I'll post pics.

No time like the present, Bruce. Make your bed first. ;)

Thanks. If I could, I'd replace just about everything in the house with antiques..heck, I'm an antique, so why not? ;)

Actually, the bed is in storage. It's just a double and my matress/box spring is queen size. Eventually the entire set will become guest room furniture and I'll get the 4 poster pineapple bed out of storage.

Oh, and my camera batteries are dead. :(

OK, I'll wait.

Our guest bed is also only a double and the mattress/box spring are queen size. We bought these metal "extensions" so the bed rails fit the wood frame of the bed...I'll show you the next time you are at our house.
