Spiders
I live at the beach in Delaware and the biggest nuisance here are spiders. I have tried many of the over the counter spray products stocked by Lowes and Home Depot. They are useless. The spiders may stay away for a couple days but they come back every time. Anyone have a suggestion for something more effective than these products. We do not have any pets so something more industrial would not be a problem. Thanks.

I live in a wooded lot, spiders are a necessary predator. We allow them pretty much free run, EXCEPT the bedroom, where I have found the only real method of killing, a sandal. Otherwise they keep all of the other bugs at bay, but we also have cats, and they do believe that spiders are tasty. Sorry I could be of more help, but after trying numerous methods of de-spidering we have adopted the idea of mutual existence.

For the big, giant, black widow with poison dripping from the fangs waiting to nail you, you can use hornet spray. That stuff is also an excellent “human repellent”, cheaper and as effective as pepper spray. It uses static electricity for the initial knockdown, chemicals do the rest. |
Not a complete eradication... but I’ve had good luck with “Victor Poison-Free Insect Magnet Traps”. They have very sticky glue that traps any insect that steps on it. I’ve placed one at each side of my garage door openings and they have trapped hundreds of insects. The only problem is that you may witness a struggle until each insect dies.

Ray, you've probably already tried this but... I use Home Defense from Home Depot, among other stores, in drier southern California and it works well on black widows. I spray holes or openings where they like to hide out in during the day. I normally see a few dead ones a day or two later. They make super messy nests or webs, unlike the elegant webs of garden spiders for catching insects. I spray the base of all the outside and garage walls and all around the window casings, outside. I too use Home Defense . . . around the house outside . . . for ants. OMG, black widows. We'd move.

You know how to tell a black widow web from another spider? When you tear it down it makes a noise like it's on fire. Really weird, but I have experienced it many times.

We live on a wooded piece of property with lots of bugs. With spiders we basically have a live and let live policy. It's the big black ants that bother us. I spray around the foundation twice a year with Spectracide. It keeps the ants at bay for a little while.
