Spring Fling '06
OK...as promised, here's the thread to toss around any and all ideas for Spring Fling '06. I know some peeps have already come up with ideas, but let's post them here for consideration. Then we can compile them down the road to firm up a plan.
Of course, the location is a biggie. And it has to be in the Spring (end of April, beginning of May seems the best for weather). The talks were a hit last time, so some thoughts on those. And anything else your little peapickin' hearts desire. Go for it, Y'all...

Glad to see you are already thinking, Deb. We were looking to plan a vacation in late March or April and want to be able to do both!
We'd love Spring Fling to be closer to home, but our springs seem to get worse every year.
I'm anxious to see what folks come up with.

Deb,
If possible I'd like to see the Spring Fling in the middle of May as opposed to the end of April. I think planning it for two weeks later helps to insure better weather.
I'd like to see it in a different location, perhaps somewhere in upstate New York. Not for any other reason except just to change the setting.
I would be glad to help coordinate the Seminars, and I think some of the topics could include:
1. Defensive driving (I'm banking on Matt to give this one)
2. Caring for your S2000, general maintenance
3. Planning the great summer drive (using maps and GPS)
4. Photography and your sportscar (this was also a very good session and we have some excellent photographers in Dennis, Tomcatt and Canberra)
5. Formula 1, Indy Car and Nascar Racing (again we have some very knowledgeable members in Matrix, Triple-H, Carmen)
6. Leasing vs. buying, how should you get your next S (or any car)
and because we are vintage
7. Investing for the future, retirement planning (I'd work with anyone else who might want to join me on this)
I think the talks should be kept to 20 to 30 minutes and done very much like the last Fling.
I think we should once again limit the participation to 40 cars, and I think first consideration should go to Vints and known preVints.
I will be glad to take care of the Tee Shirts and magnets in coordination with Sheila and Burt. As soon as the plans start to jell, the three of us will come up with some proposed logos.

I like your suggestions, Rob.
Mid May in NY may be really nice. Still wish we could skip driving through CT "the construction state."

A few more thoughts,
If we have 40 cars we should have 4 drive groups. I'd nominate the same group leaders as last year if possible. I'd like to have a 2 1/2 hour to 3 1/2 hour drive. All groups should be moderate (no aggressive) and one group could be slow/moderate if necessary.
Bill & Barbara should be put in charge of entertainment. I'll provide the songbook, but they provide the show.
with Rob on the mid-May vote. We seem to be dodging weather issues in April. As far as location, I'd vote more south, than north, for the weather reasons stated. Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, etc.

How 'bout Watkin's Glen? Dave can give a talk on Sports Car Racing in the 60s and the history of street racing in the Glen.
Eastern Maryland would be ok. I just got back from a 3 day meeting in Baltimore and the waterfront was very nice. I'm tired of western Maryland and West Virginia.

I am flattered. But perhaps there is someone else that is better qualified?I "stepped up to the plate" (so to speak) when Drew had to pull out for SF05. I am flattered, and was pleased with the feed back that I received after my talk. As I do have a long history of motorcycle safety training courses, racing and driving schools "under my belt", I would be happy to do it. However: "The mind like a parachute works better when open", and perhaps their is someone else that is better qualified that we have not heard from yet?
Just a thought.
As far as the location. I think that once we can figure out who is interested in attending, simular to last year we can start to map out a geographic center to help determine the location. My belief is that it should be centered based on the locations of most attendees and then like last year people can make their individual judgement calls if it works for them. I thought that last years process worked fairly well, all things considered.
Just my .02
