Default Tire life

I went for my annual inspection today and while I passed, I will need to replace the rear tires on my MY08 S2000 before next years inspection.

In thinking about it, I was just going to replace the rears, but these are the original tires on the car. So probably 9+ years old.

Doing a little spelunking around the innerwebs indicates a lot of rhetoric, but there doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rules about the replacement age on tires. My car has lived in a garage for most of it's life and the tires show no signs of degradation.

Should I change the fronts with the rears just for safety?

Six years of service seems to be the standard. The older they get the harder the rubber. Great tread life but very poor traction.

Chris, how many miles on your S now? I recall it being super low mileage. At 9 yrs old I'd replace the fronts too, but that's your call.

22,236 miles. I'm prolly just gonna bite the bullet and change all four.

That then brings forth the next question. Stay with the Potenza's or go to something different? I'm fond of Michelin, so I'm thinking about the Pilot Super Sports.

Typically, I don't drive this car in the wet or the winter so a Summer performance tire is okay.

Thoughts?

The Potenzas have served you well, seems like the Pilot super sports are a popular choice. I've never had Michelins on my S so I can't help you there.

Here is a tire test to entertain you:
Rolling a tire down an Olympic ski jump to see how far it will fly

Okay,

I just bought a 2005 with 22K Miles that had original tires, I changed all 4 as soon as I got it home.

That is what I would do, my Shelby is a 2007 and I changed all 4 last year, they had plenty of tread left, it's not worth taking the chance in my opinion.

After 9 years you should absolutely change all 4.

I have the Bridgestone Potenzas on my S2000 and had the Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my BMW. Both are great tires. You'll be happy with either.

I prefer the Bridgestone's on my S2000, but it's just a personal preference. Both are great tires.
