I have zero interest in auto auctions. I never watch them on tv. And in the few minutes I might catch while channel surfing all I see is hype and people with more money than brains. For grins I met a college buddy at an auction once in Aurbon, IN. I was especially interested in the conditions and prices for cars that I really knew, such as MGAs. They went for way more than they were worth.

I agree with you. My next door neighbor spent $45K (With buyer's premium) on a '57 T-Bird at a Mecum auction two years ago. Then another $750 to ship it home. Saw a '57 in similar condition on the local Craigslist for 1/2 that price two weeks later.

Barrett-Jackson is just as bad. Way overpriced plus the fees and shipping.

There are a few I'd like in the garage.
either of the Ferrari 550 or 575M maranello's or the 360 Modena.
The Mercedes Pagoda SL has always had a soft spot in my heart. although that may be the regret of not buying it at 1800 bucks when I could have.
And I suppose if you forced it on me, the GT2RS would do in a pinch.
but alas I am a mere pauper with no such means of expression.

The bigger auctions have the "lower priced " entry collector cars that typically start on Wednesday through Friday am. These lots tend to attract the characters that tend to spend too much time ordering drinks and then over bidding themselves in oblivion. The auctions in Scottsdale, Barrett-Jackson, RM auctions, etc have tended to be the better auctions on Friday night through Sunday. Less drama and better cars for sure, plus there are plenty of car related activities as well and great weather in January. The buyers commission is what it is, you have to factor that in while bidding. Shipping costs are pretty much the same across the board amongst trucking companies, so figure 3K for a delivery from west coast to east coast in an enclosed hauler. You can always enjoy your new purchase by driving it home and save a few dollars.
