Well the magnetic pole is on the move. We are way overdue for a pole swap. When, not if, that occurs present concerns on climate change will seem like the good old days.

Glad we use triple internal reference systems (solid state laser ring gyros the size of a quarter) for aircraft navigation!

Excuse me I have to go line my roof with lead.
If the poles sort of swap... or meander without hard reference the van allen belts get rather confused.
It provides protection from an awful lot of solar radiation from ever getting to the earth.
