Seeing the warmer temps the past week and my fuel economy is way up now, the difference is quite dramatic. Fuel economy in dead of winter is terrible

Hmm. I would think it's better in winter because the A/C isn't on. I could look at my own data but I won't. Then again, you like it hot and I don't so maybe you don't use the A/C as much as I do.

Oh no, winter fuel economy is much worse. Also , automotive AC saps very little engine power, unlike a home air conditioning. Most experts say using AC in summer at highway speeds uses less fuel than driving with the windows open.

But in winter the car has a longer warm up time, and is less efficient until such time as the fluids are fully warm. We have winter blend fuel in our region which kills fuel economy, we will be switching to summer blend fuels in spring. Lastly, cold oxygen dense air in winter requires more fuel to maintain proper air-fuel ratios, more power but more fuel. The best fuel economy numbers were ever see are on the hottest days of the year, hotter air is less dense, so less fuel being mixed with it. Winter tires may not help either. Basically winter conditions kill fuel economy 20-30% generally speaking.

Huh. What do I know? I know when I was working at General Dynamics/Convair Division in the early 80's the engine on the Tomahawk Cruise missile was supposed to get better performance in the cold. Totally different animal, though. I was in Test and Evaluation in San Diego.

^3-27-2026. Today's high was 50° after a morning low of 41°.

^3-26-2026. Two days ago, on Wednesday, the high was 91° after a low of 53°. Yeah Colorado has a mind of its own but I think this is also global warming doing its thing in.

I opened the sunroof of our new VW yesterday for the first time, it was warm enough to do that.
