We went with the lowest maintenance construction we could afford at the time; brick and vinyl, with aluminum sheathing on all wood trim. Sixteen years later, it has proven to be all that we hoped. I do power wash the east side vinyl about every 4 years.

My siding isn't there either - I have a composite called HardiPlank, which I beleive is a wood and cement composite. It gets the same fire rating as brick, and doesn't need painting, so I like it!

Some folks have strong opinion against vinyl unless it's the original siding. They feel putting vinyl over old siding is just an opportunity to end up with rot, as moisture gets underneath. I'm not so sure I'd disagree....
When I sided my house I stripped off every inch of old siding. It made installing the new vinyl simple.

It seems my poll is tragically flawed. Who knew one could build homes from stone and brick and plaster?

Even with that adder people still want to say what they've got.

BTW, Bill, is stucco not used back there, at all? When I lived in Acton, my ex and I looked down on the "stucco bombs" as we called them. Tract homes. Ours was an owner/builder and original with wood siding (i.e. maintenance nightmare, but cool looking in the desert). Now I live in a tract home, "stucco bomb". It's pretty nice, after all.

I replaced plywood siding with Hardiplank (fiber cement, as previously stated) about 7 yrs ago. I also used Harditrim rather than wood for the vertical trim that surrounds it. The only way to go, in my opinion. Of course I couldn't buy it off the building supply floor because my wife had to have the beaded product that was, and still is locally, not routinely stocked. At the same time, I used a wood brickmold to surround the Anderson clad windowns and the sun made this an annual maintenance product. Last year, I pulled the wood brickmold off and replaced it with an identical profile product made by Azek (pvc). It's a little tricky to paint but after one year, it looks like new.
Mine is Hardiplank with wood trim. I wish the builder had used Harditrim. The fire dept gives me a hard time about the exposed wood.

The house is only 4 years old, but I started finding paint chips in the driveway last month. It took me weeks to figure out where it was coming from -- the louvers on one of the attic vents. It doesn't looked like it was primed before painting. I'm not looking forward to having it rust, but it must be 40 feet off the ground. I'm not going up there.

Au contraire, my dear. Lots of stucco homes in the east.

The "tract" homes have vinyl siding for the most part, at least in the mid-Atlantic states.

Didn't mean to confuse you, Patty. People can certainly say what they have on their homes. I'm just pointing out to those still commenting that "their" siding isn't listed that I/we already know that I didn't list many other types of siding. That was just a combination of local prejudice and tunnel vision on my part. We certainly have a number of brick-front homes in New England. Heck, I grew up in one. But I just didn't think of brick. There are some old fieldstone houses around, but they tend to be historic or tumble down farm houses rather than recent construction. There are a few stucco homes, but that is a very small minority. Stucco does not hold up well in New Engalnd with the change of seasons and swings in temperature. There are probably more log-cabin type homes in New England that there are stucco. I don't think any builder has tried stucco here on new homes for a very long time. I never heard of Hardi Plank until this thread.
