Default VJ Day 1945 Film

THIS IS A ONE OF A KIND OF AMERICAN HISTORY

I hope you will enjoy this four minute film taken on the day after VJ Day in Hawaii.
May we never forget what Americans before us did, and may America's brightest days be ahead of us.

This will make your day.

This video was created out of 50 minutes of video taken by this person's father. He had it professionally colorized then used iMovie to create this 4 minute clip.
It is accompanied by Jimmy Durante's "I'll Be Seeing You". The photography is quite sharp and the movie is like it was taken yesterday. May we never forget what Americans before us did, and may America's brightest days be ahead of us.

About this video: "My Dad shot this film along Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. This is what Waikiki used to look like, before all the high rises. Notice the street car tracks in the pavement."

Dave,

A few years ago, I saw a TV show where one of the Andrews Sisters related a story about a concert given to US soldiers in Europe after the German surrender. Most of the audience was destined to invade Japan; the Andrews sister was presented with a note announcing the Japanese surrender. Think about it: the GI's went from about 25% probability of dying to guaranteed to live. Those guys were indeed special.

That was great Dave. My Dad served in the Pacific along with his brother and he remembers that day well. He spent a few days in Honolulu and actually stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel before shipping back out to join Halsey and the 7th fleet. Thank God he returned along with my uncle and their other brother who served and survived combat and capture in the Eureopean conflict. And, to the many men and women who served and did not come home you will never be forgotten!!

I can't imagine the emotion that went through everyone when the war ended.

Sadly, Edith Shain, the nurse in the very famous V-E day picture taken in Times Square died just this past June. As soon as I saw the video all I could think of was the photo from Times Square.
