Rather should be held accountable for his actions. If 60 Minutes did a piece on you claiming "documentary evidence" of you being a *insert horrific allegation here* would a half-hearted, almost "apology" make you whole? I think not. Unless the people who's job it is to provide us with accurate and unbiased information are made liable for obvious lapses in basic judgement, then rumor-mongers and liars will rule the "news".

I often read news from places that are critical of the 'established' news sources. Dan Rather consistently tops their lists for shoddy reporting. He seems to be a lazy guy. He should just toss it in and then he can stay in bed all day.
