I have much love for the Lotus Carltons. They always struck me as the European equivalent of the Holden Commodore SS Group A (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_Commodore_(VN)#Group_A) but without the homologation restrictions.
Probably about 24-25 mph on my bike during the Pepsi Bicycle Marathon in Central Park in the late 1970s. Probably a little faster on my skis downhill at Jay Peak, VT in the 1980s. Other than those two, I'm no match for some of the speeds I've seen posted in this thread.
Between 2008 and 2016 I used to ride an old mountain bike to work, complete with knobbly tires. Every morning I would aim to get a roadside speed sign to clock me at over 30mph, it wasn't easy because in top gear I physically couldn't pedal any faster. It was near the start of my ride so I was fresh, and I'd often keep pace with riders on road bikes for a while before the extra weight and friction got to me. The bike was heavy and wind-resistant too...
I grew up next to Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado CA. I never forgot seeing a supersonic jet flying low over the beach on a 4th of July,(early 60s) in absolute silence. It passed us by without a sound and a second later the sonic boom/wave hit us like a thunderclap. It was both sound and the physical sensation of the shock wave. I almost wet my pants it was so cool.
