The idea of not feeling defenseless is a powerful one. I have been hit by a puck, watching warmup at rink level prior to a Kings game, may moons ago. I can still feel the pain and blood. Luckily, I didn't need stitches.
If anything, a puck to the head may "wake-up" the shooter to the reality of what he or she is doing.

Just like a pistol, if you don't practice with it, it is useless. I picture a bunch of pucks thrown with maybe 1 in 10 hitting the target with any real impact. I would be worried about pissing off the shooter and having him single me out.
The locks on the other hand sound like a good idea. Don't wait for a shooter situation, lock the door when class starts.
