does hydro2 offer additional protection or is it more for looks? I don't care about it being shiny.
Hydro2 offer protection, probably more than your typical wax. CQuartz is good, both regular and UK versions. Lots of people use Hydro2 once every 2-3 months to give even more protection, prolonging the life of the Cquartz underneath.

On my S, I use GTechniq Serum Lite + Exo and I prefer it over Cquartz.

What about quick detail spray. Anything out there that lasts more than a week?

You would have to get the 500ml bottle at the minimum to make it worthwhile. The small trial size is very expensive for the amount you get. I have 7 cars in the household so I bought the 1L bottle. It's a huge time-saver, plus I can use it on wheels and grilles with lots of nooks and crannies.

I like the GTechniq serum+Exo combo over Cquartz because it's slicker and even more hydrophobic. In fact, I use a leaf blower to dry my car and it works pretty well.
