Default Rust in engine bay

I dont know if I did it from washing the engine previously but there was rust under the battery mount on the Chassis and you can see splattering spots all over the black heat shield that sits between the batery and engine.

I took out the battery sanded out the chasis and resprayed white engine enamel down there and it turned out pretty good.

Given I live in Arizona and there have been no battery leaks or hose leaks yet. I am not sure what could have caused this. Its strange that the battery was unharmed.

Can Engine cleaner or degreaser not wiped up cause something like this or would a high presure hose do something like this ?

Thanks,

Im sure there are some cleaners strong enough, that if not rinsed off could cause a problem. Just make sure if you degrease the engine to give it a good rinse. Sitting water (of that amount) would not cause this problem. Alot of times the batter moving around (vibrating) will rub paint off as well.

I suspect it was something i did and let it sit unrinsed but the only engine cleaner i ever used was at the car wash once or twice. I almost never wash the engine.

Now it gives me the opportunity to pull the heat shield and paint it

yes, an acid based cleaner can do this... best to stay away from acid. there are plenty of non-acid solutions.
glad it wasnt on a part that is more visible!

acids will etch paint if left to dry. if you have to use an acid based cleaner, make sure that it does not dry.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to make sure everything is totally dry next time i clean the engine.

I am lucky i didnt have to paint more of the bay and that the shield was there to protect it from getting on the engine.

The strange thing is the battery was fine. Nothing on the battery at all.

After painting put a lightl coat of wax on to keep all water above your new paint.
