Washing an OEM Car Cover
 

I got an OEM car cover second hand so I don't have the care instructions. Can anyone tell me how I need to wash this thing so that it doesn't get brittle or whatever and end up scratching my car?

My instructions said to put in a commercial washer with some Fantastik cleaner. No clarity on how much Fantastik though.

:LOL: ....( 2 ) cups of Fantastik, large commercial washer...( laundromat ) wash warm cycle, (not hot). Rinse ( 2 ) times, dry with cool heat...or hang outside.

I didn't use fanstastik. I used regular laundry soap, and lots of fabric softener (I topped off my softener to the "heavy load" mark).

After all, it's just a piece of fabric ...

Just make sure you use those "side loading" washing machines, and not the ones that you load from the top. The ones that load from the top have a thing in the middle, which may damage your car cover when it's twisting around.

I just used regular washing liquid to wash mine and did it at home.

as i recall the instructions also say to use a commercial washing machine... and i know why!!

i have a heavy duty machine at home, and burned out the motor using it to wash the car covers- i have two covers i like them so much! (so i always have a clean one when i need to change them)

i use a "splash" of fantastik and rinse once... dry it on low heat if you use a dryer.

have been through 2 motors and 2 machines now (past 6 years), but less hassle than taking it to the laundromat, imo!

By the way, this is amazing. I would NEVER have thought to put the cover in a washing machine!!!!

I would really recommend against the fabric softener. All you are doing is loading up the fabric with a waxy substance that will probably transfer on to your paint.

Fabric softener is waxy? I guess I never noticed that.
