Will Paint Protection Affect Headlight Clearcoat?
Guys-
I have a set of new OEM Honda headlights arriving and was planning to have them wrapped in Xpel paint protection film at a shop locally. The shop owner mentioned on certain cars, the clear coat on the headlight can come off with the film if you decide to remove it. He went on to say that he hasn't seen that problem on Hondas, but I wanted to get your thoughts on if I should go through with it.
Thank you

From my experience the problem isin't the clear coat removing just from peeling off, it is that the film concentrates the heat on the lens and eventually leads to stress cracks. Even more so on a 06+ with halogen DRL bulbs.
Id suggest you to leave them as is and throw a coat of wax on them every other car wash.

No issues using Xpel here
I haven't had any cracks. I don't see the lens being a major path of heat dissipation, so the temperature of the lens with and without the film should be about the same.
Here's my lenses after removing Xpel. No clearcoat came off during removal. However, the outer edge where the protection stops had some hardened adhesive which needs some care in removing.
Distant View: after 16-year-old Xpel film removed
Close Side View: after 16-year-old Xpel film removed.
Close Front View: after 16-year-old Xpel film removed.

I second that Xpel lens protection was one of the best things I did for my car. I have had it on for around 8 years and I could not be happier with zero damage. How many 2002 vehicles do you see on the road with flawless headlights?...not too many. I would not hesitate for a second to apply a film.
