Default My experience with a DIY soft-top patch

There are a million threads on DIY soft-top patch repair on this forum, but a lot of them have misinformation, a lot of guys have poor forum etiquette and never update their posts and say if their fix worked or failed, etc.

So after wasting hours of research, here's what I did:
  • Stitch the hole
  • Black RTV the cut/stitching on the outside AND inside
  • Patch with matching soft-top material, cover a large surface area, align with the existing seams, align the fabric pattern
  • After 24 hours, gently pull up the patch on whatever areas you missed, and use a cotton swab to RTV that area again for 24 hours

Materials:
  • OEM soft-top material (Honda P/N 86321-S2A-003) or buy off the forum $10-22
  • Permatex 81158 Black Silicone Adhesive ($5.46 as of Sept '15) @
    Amazon Amazon
  • Modifry straps ($20 as of Sept '15) @ http://www.modifry.com/index.php?rou...t_id=86ctf.htm
  • Sand whatever sharp points or burrs in the frame -- oddly I never found any on mine and still got the hole!

I actually keep my top down 364 days out of the year and it's 13+ years old. I'm happy with the fix and feel that non-owners won't know it's a patch and not just part of the original top (maybe!). Hopefully this advice helps!
