I would recommend doing the following if you want to get started in high performance track driving:
Autocross Event - lookup SCCA, PCA, NASA events on motorsportreg.com. These are the best events to learn car control and handling in a low risk environment (I.E. low chance of crashing or damaging your car). Also the events are cheap and instructors are available to help. Driver Ed or HPDE events - lookup NASA, PCA, SCCA club events on motorsportreg as well. Sign up for the green group (beginner) and you will have an instructor for all sessions over a 1-2 day event. Best way to get behind the wheel and proper training with your own car. Read their driver packets to get information on what safety stuff you need like helmet, etc. These are the best events since you get to drive very fast on a real track.
Make sure your car is maintained and brakes, fluids and tires are good. Recommend doing a brake fluid flush to a DOT4 racing brake fluid so you don't get a spongy peddle like I did on my first track event with my O.G. Honda Civic Si
If you are near Buffalo, look up Western NY SCCA. They run autox events at Ralph Wilson Stadium. I live in Erie, PA and have attended those events in the past. Great group there and smooth running events. Check them out! We also have an autox group in Erie if you want to make a short drive.
