Default Another Exhaust post!!!

Hi All !!

So, the 2008 S2Ks exhaust has served its purpose. For the older generation; "this parrot is bereft of all life". For the younger, it's sick, in an unhealthy way

So here is my dilemma. I'm more of an Aston man rather than Ferrari in terms of sound. I prefer the sound of a Bass singer rather than Countertenor (more of a rumble than rattle/ squeal !!). Things are standard on the S2k (other than the K&N) and being someone of older years I'd rather have the gentle tickle of the eardrums apposed to an INVIDIA eardrum popping ding on motorways that I've experienced on some outings. Great exhaust by the way - but for me it's like listening to the mother in law.. Ok that makes me sound old right? Hopefully that brief creates a reasonably good scene?

The current setup uses a standard exhaust and to be fair it sounds good especially when the VTEC kicks in. Well it used to. However, I don't mind a bit more of the plum tingling Bass sound in normal rev range (within reason) though happy with "I'm here" when it hits VTEC as long as the normal modus of operandi is comfortable.when motorway driving. Rather go for a stainless unit as I'd like to think the beast will stay for some years to come (too much history

It goes without saying that performance shouldn't be compromised though as an old timer on here I appreciate you're not going to get much extra power from the exhaust (remaining MOT legal) from changing your unit.

I'm intrigued by the Tanabe Concept G with a high flow cat such as the Berk maybe though I'm in the South East so not sure where I could go to hear/ explore this system. The Tegiwa has also been mentioned on here (hi flow) so interested in your feedback.

So with that brief, what would you recommend to your old f#rt uncle Mark?

I think from your description, the Tanabe Medallion Touring and HKS Hi-power Dual might be worth checking out. Neither do much for power but are renowned for their reasonably conservative and bassy sound. The Tanabe has a bit more of a standard look with the oval silencers, and the HKS having the old jap cannon canister type silencers.
UK mod + decat/hfc is also good for keeping it close to standard with a bit more throatiness, easy on the pockets too!

Milltek sounds like it could be a good fit, UK Mod sounds awesome as well, really throaty exotic tone. So good infact that I have considered going back to OEM and getting the exhaust mod done, however I enjoy my HKS Single too much through tunnels & forests.

Thanks guys. There is a part of me that makes friends grin. The guy who lives in denial and says "18 till I die". The guy that still enters VTEC when going through tunnels. As Neil Diamond once sung - "It's a beautiful noise"
I love to hear these systems in real life although this can be a challenge. I'll look at the Milltek as well with glee!!

Blueflame, if you can still get one. I liked mine, it was relatively subtle - same can't be said of the Nvidia Q300 i replaced it with, the 5" slash cut tips don't help ..... mine is referred to by some friends as barry cannon / rice cannon - a description i'm happy with

Decibel per pound improvement, exhaust mod seems popular.

From Read Cars magazine, just for info.

Exhausts

Exhaust systems are one of the first things people want to replace, however the law has other ideas. It states that you cannot alter the exhaust system from the manufacturers specifications to make it sound louder. You could still have it modified in other ways, such as fitting a lighter system but if it is louder than standard it is illegal.

Pros: A freer flowing exhaust system can, when done right, increase power levels and improve the sound of your car. If you want it loud then it will have to be limited to trackday use, where sound restrictions apply too.

Cons: Other than falling foul of the law, a badly designed and fitted system can damage the underside of your car as well as the engine internals. Removing the catalytic converters can greatly enhance your cars performance, it is also illegal.

Your best option is to fit free-flowing performance cats which will give you extra power while still filtering out harmful emissions.

My Berk 63.5mm high flow cat + Tanabe Medalion Touring dual exhaust measures 94dBA 24" from the exhaust tips and won't get you in trouble anywhere. Couple that with a Hondata FlashPro Gernby road tune (3600rpm VTEC) and tunnels -- heck bridge under passes -- take on new life. Car is a 2006 DBW car. 221bhp at 7800rpm on a conservative Mustang dyno with impressively increased mid-range power courtesy of the tune.

Those systems are expensive here due to the weak pound Chuck (as most are)

i am looking into getting one made, what i would say is the HKS is nice sound level wise but their quality is dubious, mine has badly rusted which indicates shit quality or low grade stainless

HKS hi power silent c10 years old

Skunk2 - with silencers measured 114db at 50cm/45degrees - fookin loud
HKS - 100db at 50cm/45 degrees on a SC car (sorry didnt measure on std)

I actually keep thinking about removing the rear. Boxes completely. And fitting some cheaper tubular boy racer rear boxes , I wonder , the rest of the pipe would be the solid Honda which weighs a tonne and maybe helps with drone and it would include the hemzoltz resonator , mmmmmm I wonder

maybe be great sound when the beans are released and no drone twiddling along !
