Default The Doors 50th Anniversary remastered CDs

Just got them, today. Stereo and mono studio discs. Live at Matrix, SF March 1967 disc.

Japanese Rhino-DMC remastered # WPCR-17724/6

Very good sound. Clear. Fairly natural studio dynamics. Not compressed or pushed loudness, with too much treble. Like many CD remasters. Almost vinyl...

Only listened to stereo disc, so far.

Don't know if that will happen.

On second listen through, the MONO disc has some overdrive distortion issues with the high-hat and bass drum notes. Like a bit of clipping during this remastering.

The STEREO disc is superior. Very good recording. Unfortunately, to my ears... Robby's Gibson guitar work is more distinct and clearer on the MONO disc. But, vocals, keyboard, and bass is way better on STEREO disc.

Onto the live recordings.

Remarkably I was never a big fan of the Doors. I don't know why but for some reason I just never really liked their music. I can't figure it out either. There is some excellent guitar playing and some of Jim Morrison's words and word patterns are exceptional, I just never liked the way the whole package came together.

The Doors had a TON of media hype, while they were making it big. The short version of "Light My Fire" must have played 2-3 times, every hour on AM. I just got burnt out. A friend's brother (David Lindley) thought they were only a good club band.

But, this debut album is something else. Must be one of the best, by any group. "20th Century Fox" and "Backdoor Man" are my favorite --- just because of the riffs that Robby Krieger laid down. Anyhow, this CD set (esp the STEREO disc) is very well done. The MONO has a bit of overdrive distortion. Maybe, from how it was originally mastered at the studio. MONO being more geared to ppl with lower end playback units --- like portable record players, in those days. Needing more dynamics in the vinyl. Just a guess.

I think that might have a lot to do with my distain for the group. At first I thought their music was interesting. I wasn't thrilled with it, but it was interesting. After a short period of hearing Light My Fire and all of the hype many times a day I got sick of it. I was seeing a girl about that time who thought there was something mystical about Jim Morrison. We broke up, not over that, but I think that contributed to my dislike of the band. I've never been able to rebound. When any of their songs comes on the radio, I listen, but I still don't like their music.

If my local library gets the CD set I'll borrow it (my wife works in the library so I get first crack at it) and listen, but I don't think my opinion will change.

The Doors are probably one of the most overrated bands of all time.

Not a big fan, but I could dig most of it.
