SHIPSHEWANA — A multimillion-dollar collection of antique, rare cars likely is headed to the auction block after Shipshewana lost the funding its town manager said is needed to keep open Hostetler’s Hudson Auto Museum.
The town owns the collection of 50 cars, estimated to be worth $4.3 million, that are now housed in a museum inside the Shipshewana Event Center. The cars were donated to the town by former local resident Eldon Hostetler, who died last year at the age of 93.
It sounds like they may have the auction in just a couple months. They had a really cool Hudson race car that I'd like in my garage.
We make a trip to Shipshewanna every year in the MG and naturally stop at the museum every year. I hate to see it closing. Here's two of my favorites.... both in yellow so they would match Jim's S2000. 1917 racer and 1936 conv. with a rumble seat.
Seems a shame that the town is going to cash in a year after the benefactor's passing. They should at least consider selling a portion of the cars and use the proceeds to set up a trust that would allow a smaller museum to continue.
Yeah, Dave I met the owner when I was at the Museum. A charming little Amish community. Very nice collection of Hudsons and Hupmobiles. Some nice Hornets and Pacemakers from the 50s. I could go for one of the Hornets. Tempting, but I have no room for any more cars...
