Default Reburbishment of the Iwo Jima Memorial

For those who like the Iwo Jima Memorial (as do I - my dad was a Marine), there's a pretty big $5 million project starting today - money provided by a philanthropist.

"Some much deserved tender loving care begins Tuesday in the nation’s capital. The revered U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial — often referred to as the Iwo Jima Memorial — will get new gilding on its engravings and pedestal, plus a meticulous cleaning and wax of its five immense 32-foot bronze figures, a 60-foot flagpole and granite base. There also will be updated lighting, new landscaping for the surrounding parkland and improved infrastructure, according to the National Park Service."

Since I live right across the street from the memorial, will get to observe progress there. May take some pics. One thing that the memorial has needed forever is a nice restroom. It appears that is going to be built. Those porta potties are awful and should have been replaced long ago.

Money well spent. A true symbol of American hero's. Iwo Jima was a nightmare for those brave Marines and it solidified their legend forever.

Been all over the DC metro area and thought I'd seen all the memorials but this one I have missed. Next time I'm in DC, I will have to visit. I've seen pictures of the Marine Memorial, of course, but had no idea where it was. Glad to see it get some spit and polish. Those it pays tribute to deserve no less.

^ If I had known that, we could have walked over there when you visited.

I love monuments and memorials. I stop at almost everyone I see. This one is one of the most magnificent I've ever seen.

I think the Vietnam wall is also magnificent.

Deb, do you have a timetable for when they expect the work to be done? A visit to D.C. might just be in order when it's finished.

Could be a good time for a S2000 meet ...
