I posted the following in the only thread I could find about our former President's passing.
I heard the news when they broke into the FOX baseball game. It's safe to say that that was just after 4 pm EST. It is only now that I have pulled myself away from the television. So many anecdotes from so many people have been shared today.
His passing is surely a blessing to the former First Lady and the family, yet still simultaneously sad. While so many folks recant the good that President Reagan achieved, only a few are hinting at the truly difficult times he inherited.
In the time of the 1980 elections, America, whether or not it would admit it, wanted change not only in the economic arena, but in its morality as well despite having a president from the Bible Belt. It needed a strong personna to combat the escalating world tensions. As mentioned on the various broadcasts, America wasn't exactly feeling "proud."
I'll never forget the semis of the Olympic hockey games when the USA defeated the unbeatable Soviets. Pride overwhelmed me, consumed me, as I sat alone watching the game. Later that year, President Reagan was elected. Turmoil did not disappear immediately. But in the end, his convictions and integrity in a profession that rarely uses those words, righted(pun intended
) the American ship. The foundation was laid for progress beyond his presidency.
It was also nice to finally hear that the economic boom that Clinton thrived in was largely attributed to the correct era, regardless if President Reagan would have accepted it. It also shows that the lack of morality has once again thrown our country back into a slide. Let's hope that the current administration and those to come, Democratic, Republican, or otherwise, will have anywhere near the fortitude to do and defend what is right and not necessarily what is popular.
Perhaps the former President's death is perfect timing just as in his movies. It comes at a time when America needs to be reminded that staying the course is rarely easy, but must be done for the greater good.
It also seems ironic that two of the most influential males in my life have passed in the same year. Good-bye, Dad and President Reagan.

I am wondering how this will hurt or help President Bush. He will certainly suffer by comparison to Reagan, but on the other hand, Reagan was a Republican president, so maybe people will focus on his accomplishments and transfer those good feelings to Bush. Who knows??? The timing could be interesting.

With all due respect to the late Ronald Reagan, there are many of us who didn't particularly care for his presidency.
I don't think his passing will have any effect on the campaign. I think he has passed away too long before the elections, and in spite of what some of the Republican spin masters might try to do, Reagan's presidency and Bush's presidency are two very, very different administrations. There really is no comparison or very little comparison.
I also think that the image that Reagan projected and Bush projects are very, very different. If his campaign people try to make the comparison, Bush suffers.

Ralper- I both agree and disagree with you. The current Bush has tried to model his presidency after the Reagan administration, so I disagree with you that there aren't similarities.
I do agree that the presentation, perception, and eventual acceptance of the two are different. For you to say that you didn't care for the Reagan administration is certainly your right and no one should say otherwise. But for you not to admit/accept that his was in fact the correct course, even with the benefit of hind-sight, seems remiss.
BTW, although I was not old enough to officially vote in '76, I did vote for Carter in our mock elections. I confess. I did not make that same mistake next time around. We all should be so noble as to admit our mistakes.

You speak for whom? You keep mentioning "us" as if you're the unofficial spokesman for Wendy's!
And if you look back to find fault for any other reason than to learn, then you waste time as I have responding to your response.
And please, do not put words in my mouth. If want to quote me, then quote me. But don't add or subtract. I do not go through life with blinders on- I am well aware of some of his administration's shortcomings as I know everyone of us has fallen short.
Finally, discussing him and things related to him, for or against, is a tribute to him. It is not off-topic.
