OMG What Have We Done??
We have been looking at houses for a short time and it can be enough to make you put your hair out!! 
We decided that we should get a single story house with little or no yard maintenance.
Well tonight we signed papers to have one built.
We figured that is was now or never.

Good luck. I know Billy and Diane built one. And Jim and Chris built one. Maybe they will post their experiences. Billy's first builder went out of business so a second one finished theirs. Had to be frustrating. Are you building from a set of existing architectural plans or having your own drawn up? Keep us posted. Should be exciting.

Good luck. It is not something that I ever had the desire to pursue. Just know that the process always results in unforeseen circumstances and requires you to make dozens if not hundreds of decisions, each of which will cost you $$.

about 20 years ago my wife and I replaced the kitchen counters and flooring in our previous house.
The selection process for those two items took close to six months before consensus was achieved.
We now know that we will never be able to build a house together.
We are both far to particular ( re: anal retentive).
When we reach agreement it's beautiful but the process just takes way to long.

BTW, you will love one story living. We've lived in our ranch style home for 32 years. When we thought of moving several years ago, I was shown way too many Cape Cod style houses. My criteria required full bed and bath on lower level thinking of age related difficulties making it difficult to climb stairs. I was shown a few of those, but most of what we saw still required too much work to match what we had already done in our own home.
So we stayed where we were and now we have no need to downsize. We just need a garage.

When I read about Scoots' building a new home, I was thinking that maybe he could plan on a 4 or 5 car garage, and you could store one of your cars in his new garage.

That would be nice if he did that for us. It's a bit of a haul to pick up the car for the weekend though! We'd even let him drive the Subaru we'd store there.

We built a five bedroom, two story house in Ontario and have to say it was a great experience, we learnt lots along the way. At that time any decision cost about $1,000 but today I think you can add another zero to that. i.e. $10,000. Have fun and be sure to build what you really want.
